President Trump signed new Russia sanctions into law on Friday, expanding pressure on Moscow over its war in Ukraine after the measure cleared Congress.
The legislation targets Russian officials, banks and the shadow fleet used to transport its oil.
It directs President Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest importers of Russian oil and natural gas.
An exemption covers countries buying less than 15% of Russia's natural gas exports that have taken significant steps to reduce those purchases.
The package also extends existing Iran sanctions for five years, while Democratic critics warned that its expanded tariff powers could hurt US consumers and European allies.
