🇵🇱 Poland’s court dispute deepens

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk defended his government’s handling of a Constitutional Tribunal crisis in a televised address on Saturday, following a confrontation at the court the night before.

President Karol Nawrocki entered the Tribunal building early on Saturday during a confrontation with judges over control of the court.

Parliament elected the judges and they took their oaths, but Nawrocki did not formally receive those oaths and Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski refused to let them begin work.

The opposition accused the government of attempting a coup, while Tusk’s administration said it was restoring judicial independence after years of Law and Justice party interference.

Tusk pledged to provide security for the Tribunal and said it would operate independently of the executive, but offered no agreement with Nawrocki or detailed plan to resolve the dispute.
